I upgraded from an Intel Core i7-12700KF with an MSI B660M Mortar WiFi motherboard to a Core Ultra 5 250KF with an MSI B860M Mortar WiFi motherboard. Both systems use DDR5, but the socket and chipset are different, so I had to replace the motherboard as well. I'm running Windows 11 Home and would strongly prefer not to perform a clean installation because it takes a long time to restore my settings, game configurations, and other customizations. I've already installed Intel's Platform Performance Package for the new processor, and so far the system has been stable with no crashes or gaming problems. Can Windows handle the old chipset and hardware drivers automatically, or should I remove them manually? Is a clean install really necessary, and how can I verify that the new CPU is being scheduled and performing correctly rather than being affected by remnants of the old hardware setup?

The system can often run after a motherboard swap without immediately reinstalling Windows, especially if the installation is already using the correct boot mode and storage drivers. However, there isn’t much benefit to manually deleting random chipset drivers. Install the new motherboard’s chipset, network, audio, and other drivers from the manufacturer, remove obsolete vendor utilities if necessary, and monitor Device Manager and system stability. A clean install remains the better long-term option if you encounter unexplained crashes, device errors, or performance issues.
You can validate the upgrade with tools such as Task Manager, CPU-Z, HWiNFO, and a few CPU benchmarks. Check that Windows identifies the Core Ultra 5 250KF correctly, that all cores and threads are present, temperatures and clocks look normal, and the benchmark results are in the expected range. Installing the current BIOS and Intel platform drivers is also important. These checks can show whether the processor is functioning correctly, but they don’t guarantee that an old Windows installation is completely clean.
A clean Windows installation is the safest and generally recommended approach when changing both the CPU platform and motherboard. Windows may boot and appear to work normally with the existing installation, but old chipset, storage, networking, and vendor utilities can leave behind conflicts or cause problems later. In practice, troubleshooting those issues can take longer than reinstalling Windows when you have time to do it properly.

That makes sense, but I’m not seeing any problems right now and would rather postpone the reinstall until it’s more convenient.
