Do Waterproof Bone-Conduction Headphones Sound Worse Than Regular Ones?

I'm considering bone-conduction headphones, but I know I'll probably drop them in the sink if I buy a non-waterproof pair. I'd also like to use them in the shower or while swimming. A tech-savvy friend told me waterproof models usually have worse audio quality than non-waterproof ones. Is there really a noticeable difference, or would waterproof headphones still sound decent enough for everyday listening?

Bone-conduction headphones generally won’t match regular headphones for music quality, waterproof or not. They’re usually fine for podcasts, spoken audio, and casual listening, but expectations should be realistic. If you need them for swimming, choose a model with an appropriate swimming rating rather than just one labeled splash-resistant.

Waterproofing itself shouldn’t automatically make the audio worse. The transducers and skin-contact surfaces are still enclosed in plastic; the waterproofing mainly seals the joints and openings. Sound quality will depend more on the specific model and its tuning than on whether it has water resistance.

If you plan to use them in the shower or while swimming, waterproof is the sensible choice. The difference probably isn’t dramatic, and water noise will affect what you hear anyway. You could always start with a waterproof pair and consider a higher-quality non-waterproof model later if you want better sound for dry use.

I’m not looking for audiophile-level sound—I’m mainly worried that the waterproof version will sound genuinely awful.
