The program generally lets you upgrade once you’ve made the required number of monthly payments, often 12, and returned the current phone in acceptable condition. That doesn’t guarantee the next upgrade will cost $0, though. The new phone’s price, your remaining balance, taxes, and any difference in trade-in value all matter. It’s better to think of this as an early-upgrade option rather than a guaranteed free yearly trade-in.
