Does Apple’s Upgrade Program really let me switch to each new Pro model for little or no extra cost?

I'm trying to understand how Apple's Upgrade Program works with the yearly iPhone releases. For example, if I upgrade from an iPhone 16 Pro to a 17 Pro after 12 months, the trade-in value could potentially cover the remaining cost and even leave some value as a gift card. If upgrading from the 17 Pro to an 18 Pro costs around $200 because of a price increase, would I then be able to trade in the 18 Pro after another 12 months and move to the 19 Pro with little or no additional cost? Is the phone eligible for an upgrade after the required payments, or would I still owe a significant balance? I'm looking for a straightforward explanation of the upgrade option and how future price changes affect it.

Make sure you’re looking at Apple’s actual Upgrade Program terms rather than treating it like a standard lease. The exact eligibility period and payoff rules are set by the financing agreement. A future model’s higher price would normally mean higher payments or an extra amount due, so the apparent $0 upgrade can’t be assumed for every generation.

The program generally lets you upgrade once you’ve made the required number of monthly payments, often 12, and returned the current phone in acceptable condition. That doesn’t guarantee the next upgrade will cost $0, though. The new phone’s price, your remaining balance, taxes, and any difference in trade-in value all matter. Since the 18 Pro and 19 Pro pricing isn’t known yet, nobody can confirm what those upgrades would cost.

It’s better to think of this as an early-upgrade option rather than a guaranteed free yearly trade-in. After meeting the payment requirement, you can usually return the financed phone and start a new plan for the next model. If you want to keep the phone instead, you’ll generally have to finish paying it off, and there may be a final amount depending on the specific financing terms.
