I saw someone claim that laptop battery life and battery-cycle longevity are generally better on Windows than on Linux. That seems counterintuitive to me, since Linux can be lightweight and run fewer background services. In real-world use, is Windows usually more power-efficient on the same laptop, or does it depend mainly on the hardware and distribution?

As a broad rule, Windows has an advantage because manufacturers specifically validate their hardware and firmware against it. Linux supports a much wider range of hardware and use cases, so desktop power management doesn't always receive the same level of vendor-specific tuning. Still, a well-configured Linux installation can match or outperform Windows on some laptops, particularly if Windows is running many services or a heavier desktop setup.
