Feedback on My First PC Build for Coding, Storage, and Light Gaming

I'm planning my first PC build and would appreciate feedback on the parts, compatibility, and possible improvements. My budget is around $1,200, with $1,500 as the absolute maximum, and I'm located in the United States.

The main uses will be coding, database work, and web browsing. I don't do graphics or rendering work, so I'm planning to skip a dedicated graphics card for now. I occasionally play games and would be happy with 1080p at medium settings in demanding titles such as Detroit: Become Human. Most of my other games are lightweight and don't need especially high refresh rates.

This will also be my first Linux system. I'd prefer a simple black or silver build with good airflow and reasonable noise levels rather than a flashy design. Long term, I'd like a solid AM5-based system that I can upgrade as my needs change.

My current list includes a Ryzen 7 7700X, a Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, an MSI B850 Wi-Fi motherboard, 32GB of DDR5-4800 memory, a 1TB Kingston NV3 SSD, a Montech XR case, and a 650W MSI power supply, for roughly $1,074. I'm not committed to the case, and I'm also unsure whether the cooler will fit properly. I'd appreciate suggestions for better-value parts, especially memory and storage, as well as advice on whether the CPU and integrated graphics are appropriate for my use.

Consider the Ryzen 7 8700G if gaming without a dedicated GPU is important. Its integrated graphics are substantially faster than the graphics built into the regular 7700X or 9700X, so it can handle many games at 1080p with sensible settings. The tradeoff is lower CPU performance, roughly 10–15% behind the 9700X in heavily threaded work. It’s a good compromise if you want usable gaming now, but the 7700X or 9700X is the better workstation choice if you expect to add a graphics card soon.

The 8700G is an APU-oriented choice, so it gives up some workstation performance for its stronger integrated graphics. If the priority is database and other CPU-heavy work, I’d stick with the regular Ryzen 7 and plan on adding a dedicated GPU later.

The Peerless Assassin is more than capable for either processor, but check the case’s CPU-cooler clearance against the cooler’s full height. The Montech XR should have decent airflow, although a conventional front-mesh case may be quieter and easier to build in than a glass-heavy design. The motherboard platform gives you a useful upgrade path, and 32GB is a good starting point; database tools, virtual machines, or containers may eventually make 64GB worthwhile.

I’d change the memory first. DDR5-4800 CL40 is unusually slow for an AM5 build, so a 32GB kit around DDR5-6000 with lower latency would be a better target. The suggested 9700X is more efficient and somewhat faster than the 7700X, but whether it’s worth roughly $100 depends on your workload. For coding, databases, and normal desktop use, the 7700X is already plenty capable; the upgrade makes more sense if you regularly run sustained multicore workloads or want the newer chip for efficiency and longevity.

The replacement SSD is a TLC-based drive and should offer more consistent sustained write performance than the NV3, which uses less desirable flash and has a less consistent hardware configuration. For everyday use, both will feel fast, but a reputable TLC drive is preferable for database work and long-term storage. The 850W power supply is also unnecessary without a graphics card, though it gives you more room for a future midrange or high-end GPU.

That makes sense. I was mainly worried that the benchmark gap between the 7700X and 9700X was too small to justify the price difference. I’ll definitely replace the slow memory, although current DDR5 pricing is painful.
