Has anyone gotten 64GB DDR5 working through a SO-DIMM-to-DIMM adapter?

I'm experimenting with a DDR5 SO-DIMM-to-DIMM adapter on an AM5 system. I successfully booted with two 16GB DDR5-4800 modules, giving me 32GB total, but it took around 20 attempts and the memory eventually ran at only 3200MT/s. I'm now trying to use two 32GB modules for 64GB total, but the system will not boot.

The SO-DIMMs are Kingston DDR5-5600 CL40 non-ECC unbuffered modules, part number KVR56S46BD8-32. They use x8 chips, may be single- or dual-rank, have 16Gb DRAM density, on-die ECC, and operate at 1.1V for VDD/VDDQ and 1.8V for VPP. The system uses a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with an ASRock B850M-X WiFi motherboard. Has anyone successfully used this kind of adapter with 2x32GB, and are there specific memory settings or limitations I should consider?

These adapters can work reliably when the memory controller and board cooperate. One setup using a 32GB DDR5-4800 SO-DIMM through an adapter ran continuously for about a year, and another 32GB module was stable at 5200MT/s. That suggests the concept can work, but the result depends heavily on the specific modules, ranks, BIOS, and motherboard.

What settings did you use to keep the adapter setup stable?

Adapter setups can be very sensitive to the motherboard and CPU’s memory-controller limits. Higher-capacity or dual-rank modules may be much harder to initialize, so the failure with 2x32GB could be a platform limitation rather than a defective adapter. Try conservative settings such as the lowest JEDEC speed, relaxed timings, and increased memory-training time before attempting higher frequencies.

That makes sense. The 32GB setup only became reliable after dropping it to 3200MT/s, so I’ll try starting even more conservatively with the 64GB configuration.

Which adapter are you using? There are several DDR5 SO-DIMM-to-DIMM designs, and signal quality can vary significantly between them. Some adapters may work with lower-capacity modules but struggle with two 32GB sticks or dual-rank memory.

I’m using the black DDR5 module adapter. I haven’t compared it with another design yet.
