I work for a public library, and the cellular hotspots on our bookmobile have become painfully unreliable. Staff need a stable connection to check books in and out, sometimes while 20–30 children are on the bus during busy stops. We may visit five or six locations in a day, and the connection frequently drops or becomes unusably slow.
We have tried Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, but none has provided dependable service. The local police and fire departments use mobile Starlink systems with flat roof-mounted terminals, and they seem to get good performance whenever they have a clear view of the sky.
The quoted cost is roughly $2,500 per vehicle plus a substantially higher monthly fee than our current hotspot plans. Before I ask my manager to approve that expense, I'd like to hear from people who have actually used Starlink on work vehicles. How reliable is it in practice, what installation approaches have worked, and are there less expensive alternatives worth trying?

For a basic mobile setup, people have reported spending roughly $300–$500 initially, depending on the terminal and mount. A Starlink Mini powered from the vehicle’s 12V system can be enough for this use case. More elaborate battery-backed kits cost considerably more, but they may not be necessary if the bookmobile can keep the system powered while parked.
Several people are installing Starlink on work trucks and vans without using expensive fleet-service packages. An off-road or mobile-equipment shop may charge much less, and magnetic, suction, or roof-rack mounts can work well. The system has handled remote work, video meetings, and normal business traffic reliably in our experience.
It works very well for mobile operations, and you may not need a $2,500 installation. A Starlink Mini, a roof-rack mount, and a suitable 12V-to-30V power adapter can cost around $500 if your team handles the installation. We use a similar setup on a search-and-rescue truck, and it has been reliable. The main limitation is obstruction—heavy tree cover, bridges, and tall buildings can interrupt service.
Before switching technologies, it may be worth testing a proper cellular router with roof-mounted, high-gain external antennas. Products from the mobile networking market can combine multiple carriers and sometimes improve performance significantly. However, if you already have full signal strength but virtually no usable bandwidth because nearby towers are overloaded, better antennas probably will not solve the underlying congestion.
That is exactly what we’re seeing. We can sit next to a tower with full bars and still have almost no throughput. The area has unusually heavy cellular use because many households and businesses avoid fixed-line internet, so the towers and their backhaul become overloaded. That’s why we’re considering satellite as a completely separate connection.
Starlink seems like a strong fit when cellular towers are congested rather than completely out of range. Some vehicles have used it successfully in remote areas, including for video calls and all-day work. Just keep an eye on the service plan’s data limits and expect occasional interruptions near large buildings, dense trees, or concrete structures.

Our bookmobile department lead handles a lot of the vehicle’s mechanical and electrical work, so we may be able to install it ourselves and reduce the cost.
