I have an older external hard drive that connects through FireWire 400, but it doesn't appear when I connect it to my newer Macs. Is there a straightforward way to recover the files without professional data-recovery help?

The easiest option is usually to remove the actual hard drive from its old FireWire enclosure and connect it through USB. The enclosure is generally just an interface, while the drive inside is often a standard SATA model. You can use a SATA-to-USB adapter, a modern USB enclosure, or a dock that accepts bare laptop and desktop drives.

If you don’t know what type of drive is inside, look up a guide for opening that enclosure model before buying an adapter. Avoid forcing anything, and make sure the drive is handled carefully if the files are important.

If you’re running a very recent version of macOS, FireWire support may have been removed, so adapters alone might not help. If possible, try connecting the drive to an older Mac that still supports FireWire and copy the data from there.

It’s worth checking the macOS version first, since newer releases no longer support FireWire directly.
