I'm a software developer looking to restart my career in systems administration, with a focus on Microsoft 365. I've watched several videos and tutorials, but I'm unsure how to get meaningful hands-on practice. What's the best way to build a lab for Active Directory, Intune, Entra ID, Azure, and other Microsoft administration tools? Are there affordable trials, labs, or learning paths you'd recommend for someone starting from the basics?

For Active Directory, set up a small virtual lab on your own computer using a hypervisor. Install a Windows Server evaluation copy, configure a domain, and add one or two client machines so you can practice users, groups, DNS, Group Policy, and permissions. The evaluation period is long enough to experiment, and you can rebuild the environment when needed.
For Microsoft 365, the old free developer tenant option may not be available anymore, so a practical alternative is to create your own tenant with one or two licensed users. That gives you room to explore the admin center, identity settings, Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, and basic security features. Entra ID and Azure also have free or very low-cost features that are useful for learning—just monitor usage and spending carefully.
The most useful practice is working directly in the products. Create a small test environment and give yourself realistic tasks: onboard a user, assign licenses, configure MFA and conditional access, enroll a device with Intune, deploy an application, create compliance policies, and troubleshoot the results. A Microsoft 365 Business Premium trial can provide access to many of these features for a limited period, although trial availability and tenant-creation rules can change.
A good learning sequence is to start with the MS-900 material to understand what Microsoft 365 services do and how they fit together. Then move on to MS-102-style administration content, which focuses more on configuring and managing a tenant. Don’t stop at watching videos, though—pause frequently and reproduce each task in your own trial tenant or lab. For fundamentals, make sure you’re comfortable with networking, DNS, authentication, Windows administration, and basic scripting.
