How Can I Connect an RTX 3090 FE to a Corsair RM1000X Shift?

My RTX 3090 Founders Edition uses NVIDIA's proprietary 12-pin connector and came with an adapter that ends in two standard PCIe 8-pin plugs. However, the Corsair RM1000X Shift uses smaller Type 5 modular connectors, while the GPU adapter appears to use larger Type 4 connectors. Can I safely use this setup with an adapter or replacement cable, or do I need a different power supply?

The RM1000X Shift’s included PCIe cables should be used, but the modular ends must match the PSU. Since the 3090 FE adapter has the larger Type 4-style PSU connectors and the Shift uses Type 5, don’t try to force the connectors together or mix modular cables. Use a Corsair-approved Type 5 cable made for connecting the PSU to an NVIDIA 12-pin/12VHPWR GPU connector, if your PSU included one or Corsair lists one as compatible. Otherwise, buy the correct replacement cable rather than replacing the whole PSU.

The 3090 FE itself does not use the newer 12V-2x6 connector, so make sure the cable is specifically compatible with the original 12-pin GPU socket. The important part is matching the RM1000X Shift’s Type 5 PSU side.

The graphics card’s included adapter is intended for ordinary PCIe power cables, but its PSU-side plugs are not compatible with the RM1000X Shift’s smaller Type 5 sockets. A Type 5-to-12-pin cable or another officially compatible Corsair cable is the right solution. Modular PSU cables are not universal, so avoid using a Type 4 cable from another Corsair unit or any cable that merely looks similar.
