I have a personal Dell laptop whose BIOS does not expose the advanced settings I need. I want to enable hardware virtualization so I can run Linux Mint in a virtual machine. I first tried Dell Command Configure, but importing the generated configuration failed with an error saying that some features could not be imported.
I then installed the DellBIOSProvider PowerShell module and switched to the DellSmbios: provider drive. I attempted to enable the setting with:
Set-Item -Path "DellSmbios:BIOSSetupAdvancedModeAdvancedMode" -Value "Enabled"
However, PowerShell returned an SMBIOSWriteFailed error. The laptop does not appear to have a BIOS password, and it is not managed by an organization. Is the path or value incorrect, or does this model simply not support changing or exposing that setting?

Before trying to write a value, enumerate the provider and confirm which settings are actually available and writable. Importing the module should normally create the `DellSmbios:` drive, but you can verify it with `Get-PSDrive` and inspect the returned items. A guessed path like `BIOSSetupAdvancedModeAdvancedMode` will fail if that hierarchy is not present on this model.
A BIOS password can prevent changes, but the failure does not necessarily mean a password is the problem. Dell's tools still depend on firmware support, and the model documentation appears not to list that advanced setting. If the BIOS has no virtualization option and the provider does not expose one, there is no supported PowerShell command that can force it on; the CPU, firmware, or model may simply not provide that feature.
The provider cannot create BIOS settings that the laptop firmware does not support. It can only read and modify attributes exposed by that particular model. Check the owner's manual for the exact model first; if hardware virtualization or an advanced-mode switch is not listed there, the PowerShell provider probably cannot enable it either. You can inspect the available attributes with commands such as `Get-ChildItem DellSmbios: -Recurse` and then look for a virtualization-related setting.
