How can I explain why I’m switching my own PC from Windows to Linux?

I'm migrating my own computer from Windows to Linux Mint, and my 70-year-old father has been curious—and somewhat skeptical—about why I'm doing it. He isn't very interested in technology and usually relies on me for tech support. I've tried explaining system bloat, comparing resource usage, and using features like Microsoft Copilot as examples, but he still wonders why I don't simply remove the unwanted parts of Windows.

I'm not trying to migrate his computer or pressure him into using Linux. I just want to explain my reasoning clearly enough that he understands why I've researched the change and decided it suits me.

If he wants a demonstration, boot a Linux live USB on your computer and show him the tasks you normally do. That lets him see the desktop and applications without changing his machine or making a permanent commitment. Emphasize that this is your experiment on your own PC, not a recommendation that he needs to change his.

You may not need to convince him at all. Tell him that you’ve done your research, that you like the approach, and that switching back to Windows is always possible if it doesn’t work out. Then use Linux normally and let the results speak for themselves. If he sees you getting your work done without problems, that will be more persuasive than trying to win an argument.

Be careful with claims like “Linux is faster” or “Windows is bloated” as if they apply equally to everyone. For basic web browsing and office work, he may not notice much difference, and Linux can introduce its own learning curve or compatibility issues. A better explanation is that Linux gives you a cleaner, more configurable system and avoids some Windows behavior you personally dislike, such as bundled features, advertising, telemetry, or forced changes.

Start with how you use your computer instead of arguing that Linux is universally better. Explain what Linux improves for you—less bundled software, more control, fewer unwanted services, or better performance—and demonstrate those benefits while using it. “Better” depends on the person, so practical examples will probably make more sense to him than benchmarks or technical terminology.

That’s fair. I’m not trying to make him switch; I mainly want him to understand why Linux fits my own needs.

A simple analogy might help: Windows is like a modern car that comes with lots of built-in features and restrictions chosen by the manufacturer. Linux is more like a car you can repair, customize, and configure yourself. The first option may be easier for someone who wants everything predetermined, while the second is appealing if you value control and want to choose what gets installed.

That analogy may work especially well because he spent his career in auto body work and understands the difference between a sealed, feature-packed vehicle and one that can be modified.
