My roommate's router is in their bedroom, and I currently connect over Wi‑Fi. I'd like a more stable connection for gaming, so I bought MoCA adapters because the house has coaxial outlets in several rooms. However, the router is connected to coax, and unplugging that cable disconnects the internet. I'm confused about whether MoCA will work with this setup and what equipment or wiring I actually need. What's the best way to get a wired connection in my room without moving the router?

If running Ethernet or using MoCA isn’t practical, a powerline networking kit is another option. It sends the connection through your home’s electrical wiring, although performance depends heavily on how the outlets are wired and which circuits they’re on. It can work well, but it’s usually less consistent than Ethernet or MoCA.
Another option is a long, slim pre-terminated fiber or Ethernet cable routed along baseboards, if the distance and installation allow it. Before buying more equipment, identify whether the existing coax outlets are connected to one another and whether the current box is a cable modem/router. That will determine whether MoCA is viable.
First, confirm what type of internet service this actually is. Fiber service normally enters through an optical network terminal, while cable service may be marketed as “fiber-powered” but still use coax for the final connection into the home. If the router or modem is using coax for its internet connection, that does not automatically prevent MoCA from working, but you’ll need a MoCA adapter at both ends. Connect one adapter to the router’s Ethernet LAN port and the coax outlet, then connect the second adapter to the coax outlet in your room and run Ethernet from it to your computer or console. You may also need MoCA-compatible splitters, and any unused coax outlets should be properly terminated.
Check whether the router has an unused LAN Ethernet port. If you can run a Cat5e or Cat6 cable from the router to your room, that’s the simplest and most reliable option. If the cable needs to connect to several wired devices, add an inexpensive Ethernet switch in your room. Ethernet—not coax—connects directly to your gaming system.
MoCA adapters are specifically designed to send Ethernet over existing coax, so the coax being used by the internet service doesn’t necessarily rule them out. The important part is the wiring layout and whether the adapters support the same MoCA standard. Follow the adapter diagram carefully: router LAN port to the first adapter, coax from that adapter to the wall, then coax from the wall in your room to the second adapter and Ethernet from there to your device.
