How can I improve performance and stop crashes in Oblivion Remastered?

I recently started Oblivion Remastered again after previously getting it to run almost flawlessly. Now it either stutters severely or crashes shortly after launching. I've checked my hardware and tested other games, and everything else seems fine. My system has an RTX 2070 and an i7-9700K, which are older but still handle modern games reasonably well. Has anyone found reliable settings or fixes that make the game run smoothly?

There are ongoing community-made fixes, but some are still works in progress and may not solve outright crashes. If the remaster remains unstable, heavily modding the original Oblivion—or waiting for a more mature overhaul project—may be a less frustrating option.

One less obvious fix is reducing your mouse polling rate. A high polling rate made the game nearly unplayable for me, while lowering it made the game stable. It’s worth testing if you’re using a high-performance mouse.

Look for performance guides that provide customized configuration or INI settings rather than traditional mods. A carefully tuned configuration made a major difference for me without making the game look terrible.

Unfortunately, the game seems to have optimization problems even on much stronger systems. Ray tracing can be especially demanding, so disabling it and lowering the most intensive settings may help, but some of the stuttering and crashes appear to be game-specific.
