How can I lower temperatures on an i7-14700K?

I recently installed a new motherboard, Intel Core i7-14700K, DeepCool AK700 cooler, and graphics card. The CPU idles around 65°C across the cores and reaches 100°C during stress tests. I removed the cooler's protective film, applied thermal paste, and remounted it tightly with very little movement, so I'm not sure what else could be causing the high temperatures. Ambient temperature is about 28°C. Is the cooler insufficient, or should I adjust the CPU power limits or voltage?

The AK700 is a decent single-tower cooler, but the i7-14700K can draw well over 200 watts under an all-core workload. Reaching 100°C in a stress test is expected when the CPU is allowed to run without power limits, but that cooler will likely struggle. A high-end dual-tower cooler such as the Phantom Spirit or AK620 may help, while a 360 mm liquid cooler would provide more thermal headroom.

Even some larger air coolers still run very hot with this processor during benchmarks. You may need both a stronger cooler and an undervolt or reduced power limit.

Check the motherboard’s BIOS settings for unlimited or enhanced turbo power settings. Setting a reasonable long-term power limit and lowering the core voltage can reduce temperatures substantially with only a small performance loss. Keep the voltage conservative and test stability after each change; around 1.375 V was suggested as an upper target, not necessarily a value to force manually.

Thanks, that makes sense. I ordered a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO and will also look into power limits or an undervolt if the temperatures are still too high.

The Phantom Spirit should be a meaningful improvement over the AK700, but don’t expect it to keep an unrestricted 14700K cool and quiet during every benchmark. Combining it with sensible power limits or a mild undervolt is probably the best approach.

65°C at idle is high but not automatically dangerous with a 28°C room, especially if background programs are active. However, the jump to 100°C suggests the CPU is hitting its thermal limit under heavy load. Make sure the pump or fan settings are correct if you switch coolers, and verify temperatures with a reliable monitoring tool.
