How can I reduce gaming performance issues with one 16GB DDR5 stick?

My parents surprised me with a gaming PC, and I'm very grateful for it. It has a Ryzen 7 7700, an RTX 5070, and a single 16GB DDR5-5600 memory stick. I know running one stick isn't ideal, but I plan to keep this system for a long time. Is there anything I can do to reduce the performance impact or stuttering until I can add more RAM?

The 16GB capacity may be just as important as the single-stick configuration. Some newer games, Windows background tasks, browsers, and launchers can push 16GB close to its limit, forcing the system to use the much slower page file. Close unnecessary background programs, avoid running every setting at maximum, and check Task Manager while a game is stuttering to see whether memory usage is near 100%. Adding another 16GB stick eventually would improve both capacity and memory bandwidth.

My average FPS can be high while the 1% lows are much lower—for example, around 120 FPS average but 60 FPS for the 1% lows. That’s why the stutters are so noticeable.

There isn’t a software setting that can turn one physical stick into full dual-channel performance. Some DDR5 modules use two 32-bit subchannels, which makes the penalty smaller than it was with older memory generations, but two sticks are still faster. You can continue using the PC as-is and save for a second compatible module; it isn’t necessarily an emergency upgrade unless you’re regularly running out of memory or the games are consistently stuttering.

The single stick will reduce performance somewhat, but it shouldn’t make the system unusable. Depending on the game, the difference might range from barely noticeable to a more significant drop in average FPS and especially 1% lows. Enable the memory’s EXPO profile in the BIOS so it runs at its advertised speed, assuming the option is available. In the future, adding a matching stick is the best upgrade. Check the model or part number on the existing module and buy the closest possible match.

Some stuttering may not be caused by the RAM at all. Unreal Engine 4 and 5 games are well known for shader-compilation and asset-streaming stutters, and those can happen even on powerful systems with dual-channel memory. Make sure the chipset and graphics drivers are current, let shader caches finish building, and monitor CPU, GPU, RAM, and disk usage during the problem. If the issue happens mainly in Unreal Engine games, the engine may be the bigger culprit than the single memory stick.
