How can I safely use a 4K gaming PC on a cargo ship?

I work aboard a cargo vessel on seven- to eight-month contracts, so I spend most of the year at sea and only return home for about two months. I'd like to bring my desktop gaming PC and continue playing at 4K while onboard. I've heard shipboard electricity can have voltage fluctuations, electrical noise, unusual grounding, and occasional interruptions, but I'm not sure how serious those concerns are for a consumer PC. I also can't easily fly with a UPS because of its size and battery restrictions, and I'd prefer not to buy and abandon one for every contract. What would be the best way to protect the computer without switching entirely to a laptop or handheld? Advice about transporting, securing, and operating a desktop in a moving, humid marine environment would also be appreciated. My current power supply is a Corsair SF1000.

If you’re committed to the desktop, consider a small-form-factor build mounted in a rugged case, with the GPU thoroughly braced and no loose internal parts. Bring installation media and backups in case an unexpected shutdown corrupts something. Before committing, verify the outlet voltage and frequency, grounding arrangement, cabin wattage limit, humidity rules, and whether the company requires approved electrical equipment.

A quality PSU already filters a lot of normal electrical noise. Use a reputable, appropriately rated surge protector or, if the ship permits it, a shipboard-rated power conditioner. An oversized, high-quality PSU is preferable to a cheap one, but none of these devices can keep the PC running during a blackout. Ask the ship’s electrician what protection is approved rather than buying a random consumer conditioner.

A lead-acid UPS may be more practical than a lithium battery unit if the vessel allows it, but it will still be heavy and may not work correctly with the ship’s electrical system. Buying or shipping one locally before boarding could be the simplest option if the company approves it.

For this lifestyle, a high-end gaming laptop or compact gaming system is still the lowest-risk solution. It has a built-in battery buffer, is easier to transport by air, and is designed to tolerate movement better than a tower. It won’t match a desktop’s price-to-performance ratio, but replacing a damaged desktop, monitor, or GPU after a long voyage could cost more than the laptop premium.

First check with the vessel’s electrical or IT department and confirm that personal high-power equipment is allowed. Ship systems can use different grounding arrangements, have limited cabin-circuit capacity, and may not provide the same neutral and earth setup as household power. A UPS that works normally at home might complain or refuse to operate onboard. Critical ship equipment usually has specially designed protection, so don’t assume the cabin outlets are equivalent.

The physical environment may be a bigger concern than electrical noise. Vibration and rolling can stress a heavy graphics card and PCIe slot, while salt air and condensation can corrode connectors over several months. Use a compact, rugged case, firmly support or remove the GPU during transport, secure the case against movement, and keep it away from direct humid airflow. A sealed or well-protected transport case with proper ventilation when operating would be much safer than carrying a normal tower loose.
