How Can I Troubleshoot Ethernet Sockets Connected Through a Patch Panel?

I'm trying to bring an old wired network back into use. A Netgear GS116 switch is connected to my router, a desktop computer, and a cable that can be used with a laptop; those connections all work normally. Several wall sockets around the house are wired into a T568B patch panel. I connected patch cables from the corresponding patch-panel ports to the switch, but none of the switch link lights turn on and the wall sockets provide no network connection. A laptop works immediately when plugged directly into the switch, so I'm unsure whether the patch panel is connected correctly or whether the in-wall cables, wall jacks, or terminations are faulty. Is connecting each patch-panel port to the matching switch port all that is required, and what is the easiest way to test the wiring?

Since a laptop works directly from the switch, the switch and router are probably fine. Check one room at a time: plug a known-good patch lead from the switch to one patch-panel port, then plug a laptop into that room’s wall outlet with Wi-Fi disabled. If there is still no link light, the fault is somewhere between that patch-panel port and the outlet. If every port fails, the patch panel may not actually be connected to the house cabling, or the cable terminations may have deteriorated.

The quickest useful test is an inexpensive Ethernet cable tester with a main unit and a remote unit. Connect one part to a patch-panel port and the other to the corresponding wall socket. It will show whether all eight conductors have continuity and whether the pin order is correct. Test the short patch cables separately as well. You can also temporarily connect a laptop to a wall socket and watch for a link light on the switch, but that only confirms the complete path and does not identify which section is faulty.

If the tester shows an open or crossed pair, inspect the punch-down blocks and wall outlets closely. Re-terminate both ends using the same T568B color order, and make sure the cable is solid-core installation cable rather than a damaged or poorly fitted patch lead.

Yes, that is the normal arrangement: each wall socket should run to a port on the patch panel, and a short patch cable should connect that patch-panel port to a port on the switch. The router connects to another switch port. The port numbers do not technically have to match, but matching them makes troubleshooting easier. A patch panel is passive, so it does not produce a separate powered signal; the switch link light should come on only when a working device is connected at the far-end wall socket.

If all six connections fail, check the common points first: whether the patch cables are good, whether the cable is actually punched down at both ends, and whether the wall jacks use the same T568A or T568B wiring standard. A wiring error at one end can prevent the link from working.
