How do you handle calls from unknown numbers?

I've always felt anxious about answering phone calls from numbers I don't recognize. Usually I let the call ring out, assuming that if it's important, the caller will leave a voicemail. The recent increase in spam calls has made me even less willing to answer, but occasionally a legitimate call comes through and I only find out after listening to the message. Are there reliable ways to filter or screen unknown calls so it's easier to tell whether they're genuine, or do most people simply let unfamiliar numbers go to voicemail?

Check whether your carrier offers spam-call blocking, and look for built-in call-screening features on your phone. Some phones ask callers to identify themselves and state their reason for calling, then show you the response before you decide whether to answer.

I’m cautious even with calls that look familiar because caller ID can be spoofed. I usually let the call go to voicemail, then return it using an official number from the company or clinic rather than calling back blindly.

I keep a separate number for work, medical appointments, and other important contacts. That way I can answer calls on that line while treating random calls on my personal number as voicemail-only.

A lot of people simply let unknown calls go to voicemail and check the message when they have time. It’s not perfect, since some spam callers leave messages too, but legitimate callers usually explain who they are and why they’re calling.
