How do you handle calls from unknown numbers without missing something important?

I've always felt anxious about answering phone calls, especially when I don't recognize the number. I used to let unfamiliar calls ring out, assuming that anyone with a legitimate reason would leave a voicemail. The recent increase in spam calls has made me even less willing to answer, but occasionally an important call comes through and I only find out after listening to the message. Has anyone found a reliable way to filter spam and screen legitimate calls, or is letting unknown numbers go to voicemail simply the best approach now?

If you regularly need to receive medical or work-related calls, using a separate number or SIM for those contacts can help. Keep that number limited to important services, while your everyday number can be treated more cautiously.

Most people I know just let unfamiliar calls go to voicemail and listen when they have time. It isn’t perfect, since spam callers can leave messages too, but legitimate callers usually explain who they are and why they’re calling.

I generally don’t answer unknown numbers anymore. Doctor’s offices and other legitimate organizations may call from numbers that aren’t saved, but they normally leave enough information in a voicemail for me to call back through an official number. I also avoid calling back directly if the message seems suspicious.

Check whether your phone or carrier offers spam blocking and call screening. Some phones can answer unknown calls automatically, ask the caller to identify themselves, and show you their response before you decide whether to pick up. That gives you a chance to screen the call without talking to a stranger immediately.
