My iPhone 17 Pro Max appears to be bent, and I have AppleCare coverage. For an Express Replacement, Apple is requesting a service fee and placing an additional amount on hold. Has anyone used this process before? I'd like to understand when the hold could become an actual charge and whether there might be any unexpected extra fees.

The service fee is normal for a device with physical damage, and AppleCare makes the replacement substantially cheaper than paying the full out-of-warranty replacement price. The additional amount is generally a temporary authorization, not an automatic extra charge.
The hold is mainly protection in case the original device is never returned, has been modified, or has severe damage that prevents Apple from accepting it. A phone that is simply bent would not normally fall into that extreme-damage category. As long as you return the device as instructed and it matches the coverage terms, you should not expect an additional charge beyond the service fee.

If Apple finds another issue after receiving the original phone, could they charge more?
