How should I back up my data while replacing a failing 3TB hard drive?

I'm upgrading my computer gradually, and my first priority is replacing a 3TB Seagate ST3000DM008 hard drive that may be failing. It has become extremely slow, and even opening folders takes a long time. My operating system is installed on a separate 250GB ADATA SU800 SSD, but that drive is nearly full and doesn't provide enough room for new installations or all of my files. I'm considering buying a 2TB SSD instead of 3TB because current prices are high, possibly waiting for upcoming online sales or checking local stores. What's the safest way to back up the data on the old hard drive, and should I clone the operating-system drive as well?

For the operating-system SSD, Macrium Reflect can create a clone or image that you can restore to a replacement drive. It’s useful for migrating Windows, but it won’t replace a backup of the files on the possibly failing 3TB hard drive. Treat those as two separate tasks: copy the data first, then clone or reinstall the OS as needed.

That makes sense. I’ll prioritize copying the files from the hard drive and look into Macrium for the OS migration afterward.

If the old drive is still functioning and you don’t need all 3TB immediately, a 2TB SSD could be a reasonable compromise. Just verify how much space is actually in use before buying, and leave some free capacity on the new drive. SSD prices are currently high, so comparing historical prices and waiting for a worthwhile discount may help, but data safety should come first.

Back up the important files immediately, before doing anything that puts additional stress on the old hard drive. If it’s still readable, copy your irreplaceable documents, photos, and other data to a separate drive first. A failing drive can become unusable without warning, so don’t wait for a sale before securing the data.
