How should I prepare for a software engineering or backend internship?

I'm 19 and studying Computer Science at York University. I'm hoping to land a software engineering or backend systems internship for Summer or Fall 2027, and I want to use the next 8–12 months effectively.

I currently have no courses this semester. Next semester I'll be taking Advanced Object-Oriented Programming in Java and Discrete Mathematics, followed by Data Structures and Algorithms in the summer. My initial plan is to focus on Java OOP and SQL in October, then build one substantial project during November and December.

I'm looking for practical advice on what to prioritize, including programming practice, projects, data structures and algorithms, networking, and improving my resume. Should I change my plan or add anything important?

Practice consistently outside your coursework. A little programming every day will help more than waiting for assignments to teach you everything. It’s also useful to explore areas such as finance, healthcare, or sales, then build small projects related to a domain that genuinely interests you. That gives your portfolio more direction and gives you better stories to discuss in interviews.

Java and SQL are a solid foundation. For backend roles, learn how to build and deploy a complete application: an API, database, authentication, testing, and basic cloud deployment. Two or three finished projects are usually more valuable than one huge project that is only partially complete. Make sure you understand every design choice well enough to explain it.

Start studying data structures and algorithms now instead of waiting for the course. They are important for passing technical interviews, but they won’t usually get you the interview by themselves. Build a small project portfolio, keep your code organized, and attend career fairs or other networking events to make connections. Once you get an interview, your DSA preparation and ability to explain your work both matter.
