I'm replacing a failed gaming laptop and want to build a premium desktop focused mainly on 4K gaming, high-refresh-rate games, movies, streaming, and a little work. My budget is roughly $6,000–$7,000 or more in California, including peripherals. I'd like the system to last, remain reasonably quiet, offer good upgrade options, and be easy to service. I'm considering getting help from a local computer retailer's build service, but I'm also open to assembling it myself.
My proposed parts are an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition, an air-cooled MSI GeForce RTX 5090 32GB Suprim SOC, MSI MEG X870E Godlike Max motherboard, 64GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 AMD EXPO memory, a 4TB PCIe 5.0 WD Black primary SSD, a 4TB Samsung 990 Pro secondary SSD, a Seasonic Prime TX-1600 ATX 3.1 power supply, an Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 420mm AIO, and a Fractal Design Meshify 3 XL case. I'm also planning several 140mm fans, with front and side intake, a top-mounted radiator exhausting air, and a rear exhaust.
The target is maximum thermal headroom, quiet operation, premium components, straightforward maintenance, and long-term upgradeability. Are any parts excessive, questionable, or incompatible, and where could I spend less without noticeably hurting 4K gaming performance?

A local PC retailer’s build and support service could be useful for a first-time builder, especially for BIOS updates, cable management, testing, and troubleshooting. They can also confirm current pricing and availability, since a high-end graphics card could consume a large part of the budget. Have them verify every model number and physical clearance before ordering.
You likely don’t need a top-end Ryzen 9 for a gaming-focused machine. A gaming-oriented Ryzen 7 X3D processor should be enough, while a Ryzen 9 only becomes more worthwhile if your work involves heavy rendering, compiling, virtual machines, or other sustained multi-core workloads. Also double-check the exact CPU name: make sure it is an officially supported retail model and that the motherboard BIOS supports it.
The RTX 5090 can be dramatically faster than the RTX 5080, so the GPU choice does make sense if you genuinely want the highest possible 4K frame rates and can find one at a reasonable price. Once you commit to a flagship graphics card, though, spending heavily on an ultra-premium motherboard and oversized power supply gives diminishing returns. Put more of the budget toward the GPU, monitor, storage, and peripherals instead.
For gaming, this is far beyond what you need unless you specifically want the absolute fastest parts. A Ryzen 7 9800X3D-class CPU, 32GB or 64GB of RAM, a more reasonably priced motherboard, and an RTX 5080-class GPU would still deliver excellent 4K performance for substantially less money. The 1600W power supply is also excessive for a lower-tier GPU; something around 850W may be enough, depending on the final graphics card and its power requirements.
The overall cooling plan is probably more elaborate than necessary. The case already has plenty of airflow, and ten fans can add cost and noise without improving temperatures much beyond a simpler balanced setup. Keep strong front or side intake, radiator exhaust at the top, and a rear exhaust, then tune the fan curves. A wider 4K monitor is another option if you want to make better use of the flagship GPU and enjoy a more immersive desktop.

That’s my thinking as well: if I’m already paying for a flagship GPU, I want the rest of the system to support it properly. I’m mainly trying to avoid paying for parts that won’t provide a real benefit.
