I've heard that some games, especially League of Legends and Valorant, don't work on Linux. Is that generally true? How good is gaming through Steam, Epic Games, and Minecraft, and are there compatibility tools or databases I should use before switching?

The biggest problem is usually competitive multiplayer games with kernel-level anti-cheat. League of Legends and Valorant are effectively blocked because their anti-cheat systems require support that isn’t available on Linux. Other games can vary, so AreWeAntiCheatYet is useful for checking whether a title’s anti-cheat works.

Minecraft Java Edition runs extremely well on Linux, especially with launchers such as Prism Launcher. Bedrock is much less straightforward and doesn’t have the same native Linux support. Single-player games tend to be easier than multiplayer games with strict anti-cheat.

Most of my Steam library runs well through Proton, and games marked Steam Deck Verified are usually a safe bet. Even many games without that label work with little or no tweaking. ProtonDB is the best place to check a specific title, including required launch options and known issues.

Epic and GOG games can often be installed through Heroic Games Launcher. Most work through Proton or Wine, although occasionally you need to try a different compatibility version or apply a workaround. Modern AMD and Nvidia graphics cards generally have good driver support, while older hardware can be more troublesome.
