I Spilled MX-6 Thermal Paste on My Motherboard—Should I Clean It?

I'm building my first PC and accidentally got some Arctic MX-6 thermal paste on the motherboard below the third and fourth RAM slots. The board is an MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk MAX WiFi. The paste appears to be on the surface near a small chip and exposed contacts, but not inside the RAM slots. Since I want to be certain the system is safe before finishing the build, should I clean it, or can I power on normally? Could the paste cause damage now or later?

The small square part is likely a surface-mounted component, and the nearby gold-colored area is probably an exposed contact or soldered connection. MX-6 should not electrically harm either one. If you want to remove it, use a lint-free swab lightly dampened with 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol, apply very little pressure, and let the area dry completely before powering on. Don’t soak the board or scrub aggressively.

Residue on the flat motherboard surface is generally harmless. The important thing is making sure no paste is inside a RAM slot, since contamination there could interfere with the contacts and cause memory errors.

MX-6 is non-conductive, so a small amount on the motherboard surface should not cause a short or damage the board. It is mainly a cleanup issue. You can finish the build and test it, provided none of the paste got into the RAM slots or onto the slot contacts.

The paste is only on the visible board area in the photo, not inside the slots. I’m mostly worried about the small square component and the exposed gold-colored contact nearby.
