I bought an iPhone 17 in February and it has worked well until this trip. I've mainly been using it for Google Maps and taking lots of photos, but the battery has started dropping unpredictably. It recently fell from 45% to 25% within a few minutes. Yesterday, it showed 85%, then dropped to a 20% warning as soon as I tried to take a photo and shut down. This happened several times throughout the day, even after charging it. The Apple Support battery test reports 96% battery capacity. Is there anything I can try, or does this sound like a hardware problem covered by the warranty?

The 96% reading may make support less willing to replace the battery immediately, since manufacturers often treat batteries as normal until their capacity falls much lower. However, battery health percentage doesn’t rule out a faulty cell or another power-management problem. Keep records of the unexpected shutdowns, run any available diagnostics, and show the service team exactly what happens.
Those sudden drops and shutdowns aren’t normal, even if the battery health test says 96%. Navigation, camera use, heat, and weak mobile signal can drain a battery quickly, but they shouldn’t make the percentage jump around like that. Since the phone is still relatively new, contact Apple or the retailer and have it inspected or replaced under warranty.
