I'm planning my first PC build in about 15 years. My old reference point is a roughly $1,200 system that played Skyrim at Ultra settings, but I realize hardware, game requirements, and expectations have changed a lot since then.
My total budget is $1,500, and this PC would replace a base PlayStation 5. I'm trying to understand what kind of experience is realistic. Do most PC gamers actually use Ultra settings, or is that mainly something reserved for very expensive systems? Could a $1,500 build handle modern games at 1440p and around 60 frames per second? Also, how much would I realistically need to spend to clearly outperform a base PS5?

Ultra usually isn’t worth chasing. The difference between High and Ultra is often difficult to notice while the performance cost can be substantial, so dropping a few settings can provide a much smoother experience. A sensible $1,500 build should generally deliver 1440p at medium-to-high settings above 60 FPS in demanding games, with higher frame rates in lighter titles.
Compared with a base PS5, a carefully chosen PC around $1,000 can already be faster, especially if you buy a used graphics card. A new build around $1,500 should comfortably outperform it, although the console benefits from fixed hardware and game-specific optimization.
A balanced build could use a modern six-core gaming CPU, 32 GB of memory, a fast 1 TB SSD, and put roughly half the budget toward the graphics card. A current midrange GPU should be enough for strong 1440p gaming, while spending too much on the processor or premium motherboard could leave the graphics card underpowered.
If prices are unfavorable, it may be worth considering a slightly older platform or DDR4 memory so more of the budget can go toward the GPU. Just make sure the power supply is from a reputable model and has enough capacity for the graphics card.
Assuming the monitor and peripherals are separate, $1,500 can build a very capable gaming PC. 1080p at Ultra settings should be easy, and 1440p at high or Ultra settings around 60–90 FPS is realistic in many games.
