Is a 1000W PSU enough for an RTX 5090 and Ryzen 9 9950X3D build?

I'm planning a high-end system with an RTX 5090, Ryzen 9 9950X3D, an X870 motherboard, Gen4 NVMe storage, DDR5-6000 memory, and a 360mm liquid cooler. I currently have a 1000W 80 Plus Gold ATX power supply in mind, but recommended wattages vary between 1000W and 1200W. Would a good-quality 1000W unit be sufficient, or should I choose a 1200W model for additional headroom and better handling of transient power spikes?

Some people have run a 5090 system on 850W or 1000W without problems, so 1000W is not automatically inadequate. Still, with a high-power CPU, potential GPU spikes, and expensive components, a well-reviewed 1200W model is a sensible upgrade if the price difference is modest.

A high-quality 1000W unit can technically run this system, especially if the GPU is undervolted, but the exact model matters far more than the Gold label. Make sure it is a reputable, top-tier ATX 3.1/PCIe 5.1 supply with the proper native GPU power connector and strong transient-response testing.

For this particular build, I’d choose a good 1200W PSU. The RTX 5090 can draw around 575W and may produce much higher short-duration spikes, while the 9950X3D can also pull substantial power under heavy workloads. The extra capacity costs relatively little compared with the rest of the system and gives you more stability margin.

The usual 50% load target is not a hard requirement. Efficiency differences between roughly half load and full load are generally small, so the main reason to choose 1200W here is transient headroom and peace of mind rather than a dramatic efficiency improvement.

The consensus is that 1000W is workable if it’s an excellent unit, but 1200W is the safer recommendation for a 5090 system. Look at the manufacturer, platform quality, ATX 3.1 compliance, protections, and independent reviews instead of relying only on the 80 Plus rating. Brands such as Seasonic, Corsair, and FSP have several suitable options.
