Is a budget standing desk stable enough for painting and gaming?

I'm looking for a desk in England that can work for painting, gaming, and general use. I spend much of the day sitting or lying down because I'm unwell, but I'd like the option to stand more often. A desk could also save space compared with using a separate easel. My maximum budget for the desk is about £150, and I've heard that cheaper standing desks can wobble, especially while gaming or painting. I'm also wondering whether they remain stable when lowered to sitting height. Would I be better off buying a sturdy fixed desk and putting more money toward a good ergonomic chair, or is there an affordable standing desk that would suit this use?

The cheaper desks can be perfectly usable for some people, but differing opinions often come down to how sensitive they are to movement. For gaming it might be tolerable, but a wobbly surface could be a major drawback when painting or drawing.

I hadn’t really considered wobbling until reading these experiences. I’m now leaning toward a fixed desk and a better chair because stability matters for painting.

I’d probably choose a solid fixed-height desk for this budget, then use a tabletop easel or angled drawing board for painting. If you won’t raise the desk regularly, putting the savings toward a chair you’ll use every day may give you more practical benefit. If standing is important for your condition, it would also be sensible to ask a doctor or physiotherapist what setup and activity level are appropriate.

At around £150, you’re mostly looking at entry-level standing desks, and stability can be hit or miss. Whether the wobble is annoying depends on the person, but it could be especially frustrating for painting. A decent ergonomic chair may also take up much of that budget, so it’s worth considering your health and comfort needs separately from the desk.

I’m willing to spend more on the chair because I’d use it every day. I’ve been looking at ergonomic models, especially discounted ones, up to around £300, while I’m less convinced I’d get enough value from an expensive standing desk.
