I'm planning to upgrade my RTX 2080 to an RX 9070 XT and move from a 1080p 144Hz display to a 1440p monitor with a 200Hz refresh rate. My current CPU is a Ryzen 7 3800XT, and I'm wondering whether it would create a noticeable bottleneck with that level of GPU, especially in CPU-heavy or high-FPS games. I want to stay on the AM4 platform, so the main upgrade I'm considering is a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which costs around $500 CAD where I live. Would the performance and smoothness improvements justify that price, or would it be better to keep the 3800XT and upgrade later?

The biggest improvement may be in frame-time consistency rather than average FPS. The 5800X3D can substantially improve 1% and 0.1% lows, reducing stutters and large drops. That tends to make gameplay feel smoother even when the average frame rate does not double.
If the 5800X3D is too expensive, look at a 5700X3D or another lower-cost X3D AM4 processor if one is available at a reasonable price. Those chips can offer much of the gaming benefit for less money. A 5600X3D or 5500X3D could also be worthwhile value options, although moving from eight cores to six may be less attractive for longer-term use.
A 9070 XT can expose a CPU bottleneck in high-refresh gaming, especially at 1080p or in simulation, strategy, and esports titles. At 1440p, the issue will be less universal, but the 3800XT is still an older Zen 2 processor. If you want to make full use of a 200Hz monitor and keep the system on AM4, the 5800X3D or 5700X3D is a sensible final upgrade rather than a waste.
The 5800X3D is one of the strongest gaming upgrades available for AM4. Moving from Zen 2 to Zen 3 with the extra 3D V-Cache should provide a much bigger improvement than a small single-digit gain, particularly in CPU-limited games and at high refresh rates. It also gives you a straightforward upgrade without replacing the motherboard and memory.
Whether you need it immediately depends heavily on the games you play and the frame rate you want. At 1440p, the GPU will usually be the limiting factor, so you could buy the monitor and graphics card first, test your actual performance, and upgrade the CPU only if you see frequent CPU-limited dips. Capping the frame rate around 120–144 FPS can also reduce CPU pressure and may let the 3800XT hold up for a while.

That’s the kind of improvement I’m trying to figure out. I’m less concerned about chasing maximum benchmark FPS and more interested in avoiding noticeable dips and stutter.
