I recently built a PC with an RX 6600, expecting it to handle my games well. I then picked up a 27-inch 1440p monitor, and the card is struggling more than I expected. I'm considering replacing it with an RTX 3080, probably buying used. How well does the 3080 still perform at 1440p, and would it be better to buy one now or wait for a newer 40-series card?

I’ve had a 10GB RTX 3080 for years and it still handles 1440p games such as Cyberpunk and Path of Exile 2 very well. It isn’t the newest card anymore, but it remains a strong choice if you don’t need extreme frame rates and can find one in good condition at the right price.
A 3080 Ti can even manage 4K surprisingly well, averaging roughly 80–100 FPS in many games with sensible settings near maximum. DLSS is useful when extra performance is needed, and the image-quality tradeoff is usually minor in quality mode.
My RTX 3080 Ti still handles 1440p very well. I can run most newer games at high or maximum settings with ray tracing disabled and DLSS enabled, usually landing somewhere between 75 and 165 FPS depending on optimization. Games such as Cyberpunk can reach around 130 FPS with DLSS and frame generation, though the exact results depend on the rest of the system.
That’s honestly better performance than I expected from a card of that generation.
The RTX 3080 remains relevant for 1440p performance. The main things to watch are its high power consumption and the condition of a used card. Check temperatures, fan noise, warranty status, and whether it has been heavily used for mining before buying.
The RTX 3080 is still very capable at 1440p, especially if you’re buying used at a reasonable price. Its performance is roughly comparable to a newer RTX 4070, but the 3080 only has 10GB of VRAM and uses considerably more power. If buying new, a 4070 makes more sense, but a good-condition used 3080 can still be excellent value.
Would you wait another six months to a year for a newer 40-series card, or just buy the used 3080 and enjoy the upgrade now?
Those are great numbers. I’m fine with using DLSS as long as the quality loss isn’t too noticeable.
