I currently use an RTX 4060 laptop connected to a 1440p monitor. In newer AAA games, I usually rely on DLSS in Quality or Balanced mode to get around 50–90 FPS. I also have a desktop with a Ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 2060, and I'm considering replacing the 2060 with a secondhand Sapphire Pulse RX 7800 XT for $380. Would that be a worthwhile upgrade for 1440p gaming over the next few years? Could it also handle some 2160p gaming with FSR 4, or would the CPU and other limitations make this a poor choice?

Yes, the RX 7800 XT is still a strong 1440p card and would be a major upgrade over the RTX 2060. It should handle modern games well with sensible settings, and older or less demanding titles should run very smoothly. At $380, it’s a reasonable deal if the card is in good condition. For 4K, it can work with upscaling and adjusted settings, but I’d consider 1440p its ideal target.
I wouldn’t base the purchase on rumors about future GPU releases or on the expectation that prices will suddenly become reasonable. Buy based on the performance you need today. The 7800 XT should provide several good years of 1440p gaming, but 2160p will generally require FSR, reduced settings, and possibly upscaling to maintain smooth performance.
The upgrade makes sense if you want to keep the desktop going for several years. The 7800 XT has plenty of VRAM and should remain capable at 1440p, although you may need to compromise on ray tracing or ultra settings in newer games. Your Ryzen 5 3600 could limit frame rates in some CPU-heavy games, especially if you’re aiming for high refresh rates, but it shouldn’t prevent the card from being useful.
The price looks fairly good compared with refurbished cards that often sell for around $420. Since it’s used, test it carefully before committing: check temperatures, fan noise, stability under load, display outputs, and whether it shows artifacts. Also verify the power supply has enough capacity and the required connectors. If everything checks out, this is a much more meaningful upgrade than replacing the RTX 2060 with another midrange card.
