I'm building a NAS and trying to improve my cable management. I currently have extra SATA cable length coiled up inside the case and I'm wondering whether that could damage the cables or affect drive performance. If tightly wrapping them isn't a good idea, what's a safer way to handle the slack? I'm reusing the cables I already have, so buying shorter replacements isn't ideal. Any practical cable-management tips or resources would be appreciated.

It’s generally fine to leave some extra SATA cable inside an unused drive bay, as long as the coil is loose and the cable isn’t sharply kinked, crushed, or pulling on the connectors. Keep it away from fans and make sure the side panel isn’t pressing against it.
This is mostly a cable-stress and appearance issue rather than something that will immediately reduce SATA speed. The main risks are tight bends, damaged shielding, poor connector alignment, and blocking airflow. Leave the cable in a relaxed loop, secure it without crushing it, and test that the drives remain stable afterward.
For a cleaner layout, use several gentle bends or a loose figure-eight and secure the middle with a zip tie or Velcro strap. Avoid wrapping the cable tightly around metal or folding it into a sharp crease. SATA cables are inexpensive in different lengths, but reusing your current ones is fine if you route them carefully.

I’m trying to reuse the cables I already have since the build has already gone over budget, so I’ll focus on making loose bends and keeping them clear of the fans.
