Is It Safe to Delay the Windows 11 26H2 Update?

Windows 11 26H2 is showing up as an optional update on my PC, so I'm wondering whether there's any security risk in waiting before installing it. I've heard that major Windows updates can have bugs when they first release, but I also know staying current is important. How long is it generally safe to wait, and does it matter whether I'm currently running 25H2 or an older version?

If you’re already on Windows 11 25H2 and have been installing the regular monthly updates, waiting is generally safe. You should continue receiving security updates on 25H2 for a while, but that support will eventually end, so plan to upgrade before then. If you’re still on 24H2 or earlier, upgrading sooner is more important.

The update adds features such as Copilot-related changes and adjustments to the taskbar and Start menu. It isn’t necessarily urgent if your current version is supported, but there’s no broad reason to avoid it if your hardware and applications are compatible.

The main issue with delaying isn’t an immediate security hole; it’s reaching the end of support for your current Windows version. Once that happens, you may stop receiving important security fixes. Keep applying the normal updates in the meantime, and don’t postpone the feature upgrade indefinitely.

For many systems, 26H2 is largely an enablement package because much of the code is already included through previous updates. That means the installation should be relatively quick, and some users have reported no problems. Still, checking Microsoft’s release notes and making sure your backups work is sensible before upgrading.

It’s still reasonable to be cautious. Major updates can occasionally cause compatibility issues, so waiting a few weeks for early bugs to be identified is a fair approach as long as your current version is still receiving security patches.
