A blue, cylinder-shaped capacitor labeled 5kE20 270 16V on my AMD Radeon RX 6600 burned while I was using my computer. I saw a spark and a small fire, so I shut the system down immediately. Surprisingly, the computer still works normally with display output, and the card has survived several load tests without artifacts. I have only experienced an occasional blue screen, roughly once a month.
I cannot currently afford an expensive repair, and one specialized GPU repair shop quoted a diagnostic or repair baseline close to half the card's value. Since the GPU is important for my artwork and commissions, I'm worried about making things worse. Is it reasonably safe to keep using it, or should I stop until the capacitor and any underlying fault are inspected? Would replacing the capacitor be a straightforward repair, or could the visible damage indicate a deeper short circuit or damage to the power circuitry?

I would avoid continuing to use the card until it has been inspected. A capacitor that sparks or catches fire usually means there was a failed component or an underlying short, even if the GPU still produces an image and passes a few tests. It could fail again under load and potentially damage the card, motherboard, power supply, or create another fire risk.
Replacing the capacitor is only appropriate after confirming its exact capacitance, voltage rating, physical type, polarity, and the reason it failed. It may be a simple through-hole soldering job, but guessing at the replacement or soldering without experience can cause more damage. A repair-minded electronics shop or an experienced friend may be a cheaper option than a specialist GPU service, but I would not treat the card as safe just because it currently works.

I’ve never repaired electronics before, so I’m nervous about attempting it myself. The GPU is important to me, and I’d rather not risk destroying it or making the problem dangerous.
