Is It Safe to Put a Magnet Inside My PC Case?

I have a decorative magnet with a picture on it that I'd like to place inside my PC case. I'd attach it to a structural part of the case with no component directly behind it, although there are a few wires about 2–3 cm away. The power supply is roughly 4–5 cm above the magnet. Could a magnet like this damage the computer over time?

A normal fridge-style or decorative magnet should be fine, especially if it isn’t touching any components. PC cases already commonly use magnets for dust filters, fan mounts, and side panels. The main thing to be cautious about is a very strong neodymium magnet, particularly if the system contains a mechanical hard drive. SSDs and most other components won’t be affected by a weak magnet.

A small decorative magnet isn’t really a danger here. Strong magnetic fields can cause problems for magnetic storage, but modern SSDs, RAM, processors, and power supplies aren’t normally harmed by a typical fridge magnet.

You should be okay with a weak magnet placed on a structural section of the case. Keep unusually powerful magnets away from mechanical hard drives and avoid putting one directly against sensitive hardware. The power supply and ordinary wiring shouldn’t be a concern at that distance.
