I'm considering replacing my EVGA RTX 3090 Ti with something like an RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 4080-class card, or possibly an RX 9070 XT. I'm concerned about the newer high-power GPU connector issues, although I may be overestimating how widespread that problem is on lower-wattage models. My main goals are reducing power consumption and room heat while keeping strong 4K gaming performance. I'm not desperate for more speed, and ideally I'd sell the 3090 Ti and upgrade with little or no additional cost. My system has an i9-12900KS, 32GB of DDR5-5200 memory, a 1200W Platinum power supply, and multiple 2TB NVMe drives. Would it be smarter to keep the 3090 Ti, reduce its power limit or undervolt it, and wait for a more worthwhile future upgrade?

The 3090 Ti already uses a high-current GPU power connector, so the connector issue isn’t exclusive to the newest generation. Properly inserting the connector, avoiding sharp bends near the plug, and using the correct power cables are important. The lower-power 5070 Ti is less demanding, but I still wouldn’t upgrade solely out of fear unless your current connector or cable shows signs of damage.
Before replacing it, try setting a power limit around 300W and undervolting the card. You can often cut a noticeable amount of heat and power use without giving up much gaming performance. Improving case airflow can help too, especially with more intake than exhaust and a suitable CPU cooler.
I’d probably keep the 3090 Ti for now. It’s still a very capable 4K card, and a 5070 Ti would be more of an efficiency and feature upgrade than a huge performance jump. Unless you can sell your card for a strong price and get the replacement cheaply, the money spent probably won’t match the improvement. A future generation may offer a more meaningful efficiency gain.
An RX 9070 XT is worth considering if you mainly care about standard rasterized gaming. It can offer performance in the same general range while using much less power than a 3090 Ti, and it avoids the connector concerns you’re worried about. The trade-offs are NVIDIA-specific features such as CUDA and potentially different ray-tracing performance or software support. For heavily modded 4K Cyberpunk with ray tracing, make sure the card meets your expectations before switching.
I haven’t tried power limiting or undervolting yet, but that sounds like the best option if I can’t sell the card for enough to make an upgrade worthwhile.
