Is It Worth Spending More on AM5 for My First Gaming PC?

I picked up a used PC for $650 that includes a Ryzen 5 5600G, an ASUS TUF Gaming A520M-PLUS WiFi motherboard, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4, and an RTX 3060 Ti Founders Edition. I already have my peripherals and plan to sell the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and 3060 Ti since a friend gave me an RTX 4060. After selling everything, I expect to have around $500–$600 for a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM bundle. The two options I'm considering are a $299.99 Ryzen 5 5600X3D AM4 bundle or a $399.99 Ryzen 5 7500X3D AM5 bundle. The AM4 bundle includes 16GB of DDR4, while the AM5 bundle includes a motherboard, CPU, and a single 16GB DDR5 stick. I'll mainly play games such as PEAK, R.E.P.O., Baldur's Gate 3, and Red Dead Redemption 2, along with normal work and web browsing. Is the extra $100 for AM5 worthwhile, or would AM4 be enough with an RTX 4060?

Build around the games you actually play. For those titles and an RTX 4060, either platform should work well, and the GPU will usually matter more than the difference between these processors. AM4 is the better value if you want a complete system immediately; AM5 is the better long-term investment if you can afford the extra memory and plan to keep upgrading the platform.

Before deciding, compare the complete bundle specifications rather than just the socket. The cheaper AM5 option has limited storage expansion, slower networking, and only one RAM stick, while a slightly more expensive AM5 package may offer additional M.2 slots, faster LAN, better USB connectivity, and built-in Wi-Fi. Also check the exact motherboard and memory configuration, since the word “bundle” doesn’t always guarantee that everything you need is included.

That’s an important distinction. The AM5 bundle I’m looking at includes the CPU, motherboard, and one 16GB DDR5 stick, so I’d need to budget for another matching module. The AM4 bundle comes with 2x8GB DDR4.

The AM4 bundle is still a sensible choice, especially if you want to keep costs down. A 5600X3D is more than capable for a 4060, and the 16GB kit is already configured as two sticks. For your current GPU, the performance difference may be small enough that the extra $100 is better spent on more storage or 32GB of RAM. Choose AM5 mainly if you expect to upgrade the CPU or GPU later.

I’d lean toward AM5 if the extra $100 fits your budget. AM4 is still perfectly usable, but it’s essentially a finished platform, while AM5 gives you a better upgrade path for future processors. Just keep in mind that the advertised AM5 bundle only has one 16GB DDR5 module, so you should plan to add a matching stick for dual-channel memory. With the RTX 4060, you probably won’t see a huge gaming difference between these CPUs right away, but AM5 should give the whole build more longevity.
