Is It Worth Upgrading from 1080p to 1440p or 4K with a Ryzen 7 5700X and RTX 3060?

I've always gamed at 1080p and my current Ryzen 7 5700X, RTX 3060 12GB, and 16GB of DDR4 memory handle newer games well at that resolution. I'm considering moving to a 1440p or 4K monitor before the PC version of GTA 6 eventually arrives. My rough plan is to upgrade to 32GB of RAM, replace the 3060 with an RTX 4070, and buy a new monitor. After selling the 3060, I'd have around €500 to spend on the graphics card. For story-driven games, I'm mainly looking for the best image quality while maintaining at least 60 FPS, but I'd prefer higher frame rates for competitive games and possibly GTA 6 online. Is 1440p a worthwhile upgrade with this system, and is the RTX 4070 the best choice, or should I consider another GPU?

For 1440p, the RTX 4070 is a good match for your processor and should deliver a noticeable improvement over the 3060. I’d prioritize the monitor and GPU over immediately moving from 16GB to 32GB, unless you’re running into memory-related stuttering. Monitor prices can also drop heavily during major sales, so waiting for a good deal on a 1440p display—possibly OLED if the price is right—could make the upgrade more worthwhile.

Consider buying the monitor first, preferably a good 1440p model, and see how your current system feels at that resolution. Your 5700X and 3060 can still handle many games at 1440p if you’re comfortable with roughly 60 FPS and sensible settings. You can upgrade the GPU later when prices or newer options become more attractive.

For single-player games I’m happy with the best visuals I can get as long as I stay around 60 FPS. For competitive games, though, I’d like the option to push well above 60 FPS.

1440p is a sensible target for this setup, but 4K is a much bigger jump. An RTX 4070 is a strong 1440p card, though you’ll often need upscaling or reduced settings for demanding games. If you want consistently high 4K performance, especially with more demanding future releases, you’ll likely need something faster and possibly more VRAM than the standard 4070 offers.

The 3060 12GB still has decent resale value, so selling it while the market is favorable could cover a meaningful part of the upgrade. I’d focus less on a specific model and more on finding the fastest reliable card that fits your total budget. The 4070 is a reasonable choice if you can get one near your €500 target after the sale.
