Windows has been frustrating me, and I'm considering switching to Linux. My current workflow relies on Photoshop, Capture One, Topaz, Luminar Neo, and DaVinci Resolve for video editing. For photographers and videographers who have made the move, how well did your existing software work? Did you use compatibility tools or virtual machines, or did you switch to alternative applications?

You’ll probably need to adjust your software lineup. Some Windows applications can run through Wine-based tools or a Windows virtual machine, but compatibility and performance can vary. DaVinci Resolve has a Linux version, although official support is limited to certain distributions and getting it running can be tricky, particularly with some AMD graphics cards. Before committing, boot a Linux live environment and test the hardware and applications. If you’re open to alternatives, GIMP, Darktable, and Kdenlive are worth evaluating.
Another approach is to keep Windows available for Photoshop and Premiere while gradually moving simpler tasks to Linux programs. I’ve been transitioning to GIMP and Shotcut this way. Some distributions also provide packaged versions of DaVinci Resolve, so it’s worth checking what your preferred distribution supports before installing.
I’ve managed to use Photoshop through a Windows container setup, but without GPU passthrough the performance was noticeably slower. For heavier work, I’d keep a Windows installation or virtual machine available rather than assuming every application will run smoothly through compatibility layers.
Photoshop has been difficult to run reliably on Linux in my experience. A capable computer can run it inside a Windows virtual machine, but you may notice some lag unless GPU acceleration is configured well. GIMP handles basic color adjustments and general editing, but it feels less polished than Photoshop and often takes more steps for everyday tasks. It’s usable, especially if your work is fairly simple, but professional workflows may require a learning curve or compromises.
