I've just finished building a PC with a Ryzen 5 3600 and an RX 580, and I'd like to get as much performance as possible from it. I've seen mixed opinions about GPU overclocking, though, and I don't want noticeably higher temperatures or power usage for only a tiny FPS increase. Is overclocking this card worthwhile, or would another approach be better?

A typical RX 580 overclock only gives around 3–5% more performance, while increasing heat, power draw, and fan noise. Polaris cards already run fairly close to their limits, so it probably isn’t worth pushing hard unless you enjoy tuning and testing. Your Ryzen 5 3600 also doesn’t need an aggressive overclock for this GPU.
Modern GPUs have protections against most accidental damage, so a normal software overclock is more likely to cause crashes or visual artifacts than instantly destroy the card. Still, constantly running hotter and using more power can contribute to long-term wear. Avoid BIOS flashing or voltage increases unless you’re comfortable with the risks, and use conservative settings.
Start by checking your current temperatures under gaming load. If the card is already hot or its thermal paste and cooler are several years old, overclocking may just add noise for very little benefit. A small 2–5% clock increase might be stable on some cards, but don’t expect a dramatic improvement.
I’d try undervolting before overclocking. Lowering the voltage can reduce temperatures and power consumption, which may help the card sustain its boost clock instead of throttling. You can leave the core clock near stock, then make small changes and test with a demanding game or a stress test. Every card is different, so watch for crashes, artifacts, and temperature spikes.

Undervolting isn’t always a direct FPS upgrade, but if the card was hitting its thermal or power limit, running cooler can help it maintain higher clocks more consistently.
