I'm putting together my first gaming PC and recently ordered a Ryzen 7 7800X3D for C$459. Before it has even arrived, I noticed the Ryzen 7 9800X3D went on sale for C$569—a difference of about C$90. I'm pairing the processor with a Radeon RX 9070 XT and haven't started the build yet, so changing the order would be straightforward. For 1440p gaming, would the 9800X3D's performance advantage justify spending the extra money, or would the 7800X3D be the better value?

Before deciding, check CPU-and-motherboard bundles from major Canadian retailers. A bundle can make the 9800X3D upgrade much cheaper, or even make the 7800X3D significantly better value. Also compare the total platform cost, including the motherboard and memory, rather than looking only at the processor price.
I’d keep the 7800X3D for a 1440p gaming system. It’s already extremely capable, and the 9800X3D is roughly 10% faster in many gaming situations while costing about 20% more in this comparison. That extra money could go toward another component, and you can potentially upgrade to a later AM5 X3D processor several years from now.
That’s basically my plan too: buy a more affordable X3D chip now, then replace it with the final high-end AM5 gaming processor after a few years when prices have dropped.
For only C$90 more, I’d lean toward the 9800X3D. It’s the newer chip and offers a noticeable improvement in CPU-limited games, so the price gap is relatively small if you want the faster option from the start.
The 7800X3D is already plenty for 1440p gaming, especially when paired with an RX 9070 XT. If the extra C$90 won’t affect the rest of the build and you want the best available performance, choose the 9800X3D. Otherwise, keep the 7800X3D and put the savings toward something like a better monitor, storage, or cooling.
