Hi! I'm a graphic and web designer from Canada, and I also game for several hours most days. I'm planning a CPU, motherboard, and RAM upgrade that should be affordable, powerful, and useful for at least the next five to seven years.
My current system has an Intel Core i5-12600KF, an RTX 5070 Ti, 32GB of DDR4 Corsair RGB memory, and an ASRock Z790 PG Lightning motherboard. I'm considering an Intel Core i7-14700K or i7-14700KF, 32GB of Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5-6000 CL36, and an Asus Z790 Gaming WiFi 7 motherboard. I'll keep my current storage, case, water cooler, and fans.
The main thing I'm unsure about is the difference between the K and KF versions. I understand that the K model includes integrated graphics, but I don't know whether that affects gaming or general performance. The KF is currently about $100 cheaper where I live, so I'd like to know whether there are any meaningful drawbacks. I'm also wondering whether upgrading from the 12600KF is worthwhile at all, especially since I would be changing the motherboard and RAM at the same time.

The K and KF versions should perform essentially identically when using a dedicated graphics card. The KF simply disables the integrated GPU, which can be useful for basic display output, troubleshooting if your graphics card has a problem, and some video-encoding features such as Quick Sync. For normal gaming, you should not see a performance difference. If the KF is $100 cheaper, it is generally the better value unless you specifically want those integrated-graphics features.
Before buying anything, consider what you expect the upgrade to improve. Moving from a 12600KF to a 14700K or KF gives you more cores and a sizeable boost in heavily threaded design or rendering workloads, but the gaming improvement may be fairly modest, especially at higher resolutions where the RTX 5070 Ti becomes the limiting factor. If gaming is the priority, keeping the current platform and upgrading only when performance is actually lacking may provide better value.
The new DDR5 platform could improve overall responsiveness, but changing the motherboard and memory alone won’t make the 12600KF substantially faster. The CPU upgrade is where most of the productivity benefit would come from.
Since you are replacing the board and RAM anyway, it may be worth comparing newer CPU platforms rather than automatically choosing another LGA1700 processor. A newer socket can offer better efficiency and a longer upgrade path, while the 14700K/KF is effectively the final major upgrade for this motherboard generation. If the 14700KF is heavily discounted and your workload benefits from extra cores, it can still be a reasonable purchase; otherwise, waiting or moving to a newer platform may make more sense for a five-to-seven-year build.
A 14th-generation Intel chip can be used safely, but make sure the motherboard has a current BIOS and install the latest stable BIOS before doing serious work. Earlier 13th- and 14th-generation high-end processors had well-known voltage and degradation concerns; updated firmware and sensible motherboard power settings are important. Also verify that your existing water cooler is adequate for the 14700K/KF, since these processors can run hot under sustained workloads.
So there shouldn’t be any noticeable gaming loss with the KF? I mainly want to make sure the cheaper chip isn’t cut down in another important way.
