Is the Radeon 9070 GRE worth the extra cost for 1080p gaming?

I can buy a Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon 9060 XT for CAD$720 or an ASUS Radeon 9070 GRE for CAD$799. The GRE appears to offer better value, but I'm wondering whether it's excessive for 1080p gaming. I'm using a Ryzen 5 5500X3D, and choosing the GRE would also mean buying a new power supply, so the real cost difference is larger than the GPU prices alone. Would the stronger card be worthwhile for longevity, or is the 9060 XT the more sensible choice?

Include the power supply in the comparison rather than looking only at the GPU prices. If the GRE requires a substantial extra expense, the 9060 XT is perfectly reasonable for 1080p. If you were already planning to upgrade your PSU or want to move to 1440p later, the GRE’s additional performance and longer lifespan make it the better investment.

That makes sense. The GRE is more appealing if I can justify the PSU upgrade beyond just this one purchase, but otherwise the 9060 XT may be the better overall value.

The 9060 XT is already more than capable for 1080p, so it’s the practical choice if you want to keep the total cost down. The GRE would be overkill for many current games at that resolution, but it would give you more headroom for demanding titles and future upgrades to a 1440p monitor.

I’d seriously consider paying about 10% more for 20–30% better performance, especially since your Ryzen 5 5500X3D is strong enough to pair with the faster card. You may not notice the difference in every game at 1080p, but the GRE should remain useful for longer and handle graphically demanding games more comfortably.

The PSU requirement is my main hesitation. Since I’d need to buy a new one as well, I’m not sure whether the GRE still makes sense once the complete upgrade cost is included.
