I'm deciding between a brand-new Gigabyte RTX 4070 SUPER Gaming OC for about $650 and a Gigabyte RTX 5070 Windforce for $750. Benchmarks suggest their performance and efficiency are fairly close, so I'm unsure whether the extra $100 is justified by the 5070's newer architecture and features.
The 4070 SUPER has a larger heatsink and should have better cooling headroom, while the compact 5070 cooler may run hotter. On the other hand, the 5070 appears to gain more from overclocking, may be around 10% faster in some AI workloads, and supports newer features such as Multi Frame Generation. I'm upgrading from an RTX 3070 for CUDA-based research, including GROMACS, along with 1440p AAA gaming. AMD is not being considered because I want to avoid the compatibility and troubleshooting issues I've encountered with ROCm.
A 16GB RTX 5060 Ti is slightly cheaper, but it is considerably slower and would not be a worthwhile upgrade from my 3070. The purchase must be new because it will be reimbursed by my institution, with a maximum budget of $800. Between these two cards, which would be the better choice for research, gaming, longevity, and cooling?

I’d choose the 5070 if the extra $100 doesn’t affect the rest of the build. Newer features and longer software support have some value, and it should be a little faster overall. But at these exact prices, the 4070 SUPER is the stronger bargain: it is only slightly slower, has a better cooler, and leaves more room in the budget.
For CUDA-based research, staying with NVIDIA is the practical choice. AMD’s ROCm and CUDA translation options have improved, but compatibility can still be inconsistent and may require extra troubleshooting depending on the software. For 1440p gaming and a research machine that needs to work reliably, the 4070 SUPER is probably the better value unless the 5070’s newer features are especially important to you.
The RTX 5070 makes more sense if you value the newer feature set and expect to use NVIDIA’s latest gaming or AI features. It should also be somewhat faster in CUDA workloads and benefits more from overclocking. The main limitation is still 12GB of VRAM, so it won’t handle dramatically larger models than the 4070 SUPER. I would not choose the 5060 Ti solely for its extra memory because the performance drop is significant.
For this use case, I’d lean toward the RTX 4070 SUPER. It costs $100 less, has a substantially better cooler, and delivers very similar real-world performance. Since both cards are new, warranty differences don’t really matter here. Put the saved money toward another research-related component unless you specifically need the 5070’s newer features.
That’s my concern with the 5070: the Windforce cooler is much smaller, and cards below $800 with a more substantial cooler are difficult to find locally. I’m not sure the modest performance increase is worth accepting higher temperatures.
