I'm upgrading my PC for 1440p gaming after nearly a decade with a GTX 1080. I originally planned to buy a PowerColor RX 9070 Hellhound for £491, but it went out of stock before I ordered it. I now have three discounted options: the RX 9070 16GB Reaper for £439, the RX 9070 XT 16GB Reaper for £507, or the RX 9070 XT 16GB Hellhound for £533.
The RX 9070 appeals to me because it should be more power-efficient, while the Hellhound models offer better cooling, lower noise, and a design I prefer. I'm mainly interested in 1440p gaming and don't care much about ray tracing or path tracing. Is the RX 9070 XT Hellhound worth £94 more than the RX 9070 Reaper, or would the standard RX 9070 be the better-balanced choice? I'm also curious whether undervolting or lowering the XT's clock speed can significantly improve its efficiency and temperatures.
The rest of my new system includes an Intel Ultra 5 250K Plus, MSI B860 Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard, Arctic Freezer 36 cooler, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, and an 850W power supply. I'm reusing my case and storage for now.

If the extra cost is comfortable, I’d choose the XT Hellhound. You’re only paying £26 more than the XT Reaper, and the better cooler should give you lower temperatures and less noise. At these prices, it looks like the strongest overall deal.
For gaming performance alone, I’d go with the RX 9070 XT. The XT provides extra headroom for demanding 1440p games, and the price difference from the regular 9070 is relatively small in this case.
The discounted prices make the XT Hellhound particularly attractive: £68 more than the regular RX 9070 for the faster GPU, then only another £26 for the better cooler. I’d probably take that option unless minimizing power consumption is more important than the additional performance.
The XT is around 12% faster, so the main question is whether that performance is worth the extra money to you. The XT can also be tuned for much better efficiency. Its default clock target is high, but limiting it to roughly 3000–3100 MHz, or even around 2950 MHz, should reduce power draw and temperatures without sacrificing much real-world performance.
That’s a useful point. The regular 9070 is already a very capable card, but being able to tune the XT for lower power and temperatures makes the higher-end option more appealing. I assume running it cooler and at lower voltage could also be gentler on the card over time.
Any of the three cards should be a major upgrade over the GTX 1080. The regular RX 9070 makes the most sense if efficiency and value are your priorities, but the XT Hellhound is reasonable if you specifically value its quieter, cooler design and want to keep the card for several years.
I also do a lot of multitasking, photo editing, and video editing, so the rest of the system matters to me as well. That’s part of why I’m weighing overall value rather than looking only at gaming benchmarks.
