I'm building or upgrading on a tight budget and am considering an AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X. Would either processor be enough for light-to-medium gaming, including games such as Half-Life 2, Red Dead Redemption, GTA V, and Elden Ring? Is the 5600 still a good value, or should I look at another CPU instead?

A 5600X3D or 5800X3D would be faster in some games, but those chips cost much more and aren’t necessary for light or medium gaming. For games like GTA V and Elden Ring, the 5600 should be more than adequate; your graphics card will usually matter more.
The Ryzen 5 5600 is still an excellent budget gaming CPU. It can run modern games comfortably, especially at 1080p and 1440p when paired with a sensible graphics card. It may limit very high frame rates at 1080p with an especially powerful GPU, but for normal gaming it has plenty of performance.
I upgraded from a Ryzen 5 3600 to a 5600 and saw smoother frame rates in CPU-heavy games. Just use a decent cooler and pair it with an appropriate GPU. At 1080p, it’s a very capable budget processor, and at 1440p the graphics card will generally be the main limit.
The 5600 is usually the better buy than the 5600X. Performance is only a few percent apart, so the 5600X is worth considering only if it costs about the same. As a rough guideline, try to find the 5600 for around $100 or less, including used listings.
If you already have an AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory, the 5600 is particularly good value because it avoids the cost of moving to a newer platform. The Ryzen 5 5500 can be a cheaper alternative, but the 5600 is noticeably faster and is the better long-term choice if the price difference is reasonable.
