I'm building my first gaming PC in the USA with a budget of around $2,000, though I can stretch it if there's a compelling upgrade. My goal is a stable 1440p experience at 165Hz or higher, ideally reaching 360 FPS in games such as CS2, Valorant, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege, and Arc Raiders.
My current parts list is:
- Ryzen 7 9800X3D and MSI B850 Gaming Pro WiFi6E with 32GB DDR5-6000 CL36, purchased as a Micro Center bundle for about $880
- PNY GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB for roughly $700
- Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE cooler
- Netac NV7000-t 2TB NVMe SSD
- Corsair RM750e 750W Gold power supply
- Fractal North Momentum Edition case
- Three Arctic P12 Pro fans
The listed total is about $2,144.57, and I'm also considering an ASUS ROG Strix 26.5-inch 1440p QD-OLED 360Hz monitor. Are there any parts I should replace for better value or reliability? Is the graphics card price realistic, and would buying anything secondhand make sense? This is my first build, so I'd appreciate blunt but constructive advice.

Buying secondhand probably isn’t necessary for this build unless you find a genuinely substantial discount from a trustworthy seller. Current-generation graphics cards and CPUs often sell used for prices too close to new ones, and warranty or scam concerns can erase the savings. Put the effort into confirming actual GPU availability, improving the SSD and case choices, and keeping enough budget for a quality power supply.
A 1440p 360Hz QD-OLED can be an excellent gaming display, but it costs a lot and OLED ownership has trade-offs such as possible image retention, text clarity differences, and panel-specific coating behavior. If you mainly play competitive games, it can make sense; otherwise, a less expensive IPS or mini-LED monitor could free up money for the PC and still provide a great experience. Also, many players won’t notice much benefit beyond roughly 165–240Hz, so make sure you actually value the extra refresh rate before paying for it.
The CPU and cooler are a good pairing, and CL36 memory shouldn’t meaningfully hurt a 9800X3D gaming build. You could choose a faster-looking kit, but it probably isn’t where the money should go. I would be more cautious about the Netac SSD and choose a drive from a better-established manufacturer such as Samsung, SanDisk, WD, Crucial, or Solidigm. For the case, a Phanteks XT Pro Ultra or Lancool 207/217 may offer better airflow and value, and some alternatives already include enough fans that you may not need to buy three extra ones.
For competitive games, this system should be capable of very high frame rates, especially with tuned settings. The 9800X3D is an excellent choice for CPU-limited titles, and a 5070 Ti-class card should have no trouble taking advantage of a high-refresh monitor in games like Valorant, CS2, and Fortnite. Just don’t assume every game will hold 360 FPS at 1440p; heavier titles such as Apex or Arc Raiders may require reduced settings, and frame-time consistency matters more than the average FPS number.
The difference between DDR5-6000 CL30 and CL36 is relatively minor with this processor, so I wouldn’t replace the memory unless the price difference is small.
The biggest issue is verifying that $700 RTX 5070 Ti price. Current pricing may be considerably higher, so don’t base the whole build on a deal that isn’t actually available. If the card is overpriced, an RX 9070 XT is often a stronger value and should deliver similar high-refresh 1440p performance. I’d also consider a reputable 850W unit such as the ASRock Steel Legend or Montech Century rather than settling on the current power supply if pricing is close.
The ASRock Steel Legend is generally the better value of those options, but either would be a solid direction if you find a good price.

OLEDs aren’t automatically a bad choice. The concerns are real trade-offs rather than a reason to rule them out entirely, so usage habits and personal preference matter.
