I currently have a Core i5-12600K, 32GB of DDR4 memory, a B760 motherboard, and an RTX 4070 Super. I mainly want to game comfortably at 1440p and occasionally play some titles at 4K. Because DDR5 and new-platform prices are high, I'd rather keep my current motherboard and spend around $350 on a CPU if that would provide a meaningful improvement. I was considering an Intel Core i7-14700K, though I'm not sure whether it's compatible with my board or worth the cost. Would this be a sensible upgrade, or are there better options? Is there anything I should check before replacing the CPU?

Make sure you’re actually CPU-limited before upgrading. An unlocked frame rate with the GPU already maxed out means the graphics card is doing the work, and changing the CPU won’t help much. The fact that your games are installed on an NVMe drive is good for load times, but it generally won’t prevent CPU-related frame drops during busy scenes.
Your B760 board should support a 14th-generation CPU after a BIOS update, but it won’t allow CPU overclocking. A 14700K also runs hot and can draw a lot of power, so you’d need a strong cooler and adequate motherboard power settings. A 14700F may be worth considering if it is substantially cheaper, though the performance difference for gaming will still be modest.
At 1440p and especially 4K, the RTX 4070 Super will usually be the limiting component, while the 12600K is still plenty capable. Check your GPU utilization with an overlay while gaming: if the GPU is consistently around 90–100%, a CPU upgrade probably won’t improve average FPS. A CPU upgrade makes more sense if you’re seeing CPU-limited frame rates or stutters in simulation, strategy, or especially CPU-heavy open-world games.
The 14700K is actually an i7, and moving from a 12600K to one may not produce a noticeable difference with a 4070 Super at 1440p. One user reported little to no FPS improvement even after upgrading from a 12700K, although simulation games benefited more. If you find one heavily discounted, it could be reasonable, but it isn’t an obvious upgrade at full price.
I’d only consider it during a good sale rather than paying the current price.

That makes sense. I can run these games at 1440p, but I’ve noticed occasional drops when there are lots of objects or activity on screen, so I’ll monitor CPU and GPU usage before deciding.
